The Arizona Coyotes originally joined the NHL in 1979 as the Winnipeg Jets - a successful team from the former World Hockey Association. Initially renamed as the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996, they later played their first game as the Arizona Coyotes on October 9, 2014.
The Team name, chosen by contest, reflects the connection with Native American culture in the Southwest, where the coyote is seen as a wise yet powerful animal. The date of their first game as the Arizona Coyotes has been used to create the thread counts (width of lines) within the weave of this original tartan design: 10-09-20-14.
